Double-Hung Windows

A double-hung window can be opened from either the top, bottom or both. To open the lower sash, simply unlock the latch and raise the window from the bottom upward. To open the upper sash, unlock the latch of the lower sash and lower the window from the top of the frame. The lower sash can be raised at the same time as the upper sash to achieve the greatest amount of air flow.

The main difference between a single and double-hung window is that a single-hung window has one sash at the bottom that moves, while on a double-hung window both the upper and lower sashes are operable on the window. Next difference is that air circulation is much easier with a double-hung window when both sashes are open. And finally, window cleaning and maintenance is a cinch with double-hung windows because of the ability to tilt them inward for cleaning.

The number of their moveable sashes is what makes the difference. Single-hung windows have two sashes, but only one is moveable. Whereas, the double-hung windows have both sashes to be moveable.

The sash is the moveable part of a window. It is the part that surrounds the glass and holds the glass pane in the window frame.
